How to actually find a phone by number? (Lost my device)

Hey everyone, I’m in a bit of a panic. I lost my phone while out today and I’m trying to track it down. I’ve seen a bunch of websites claiming you can "find any phone just by typing in the phone number," but most of them look super sketchy or ask for a subscription immediately.

Does anyone know if these "track by number" services actually work?

I have the IMEI number written down somewhere if that helps, but right now I only have the phone number of the lost device. Any advice on what steps I should take would be hugely appreciated.

Short answer: Most of those "track by number" sites are scams or just sell your data. Unless you are the police or a telecom provider, you can't just ping a GPS location using a raw phone number.

If it’s an iPhone, use Find My. If it’s Android, use Google Find My Device. That’s your best bet.

Did you have location services turned on? If you can log into your Google or iCloud account from another laptop, you can see the last known location. Forget the "find by number" sites, they don't have access to cellular towers.

Honestly, the "type in a number and see a GPS dot" sites are almost always fake. If you didn't have Find My iPhone or Google's Find My Device set up beforehand, it gets tricky.

However, if you're looking for a legitimate way to keep tabs on a device (especially for families), check out VigilKids. It’s one of the few tools that actually works as advertised.

Once it's set up, you can monitor the phone's status and location without jumping through hoops. It’s definitely worth looking into for the future so you aren't stuck in this position again!

Short answer: Find My works through a mix of GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular signals, Bluetooth networks, and the last known location stored before the phone went offline.

For how to find my phone by number, I would try the boring stuff first: use Find My or Find My Device first, then check last location, lost mode, battery state, and nearby Bluetooth pings. If that was not already set up, do not assume a paid tool can magically recreate it.

I work in IT, but honestly the answer is still pretty boring.

The biggest lesson: do not trust the first page of results for "how to find my phone by number". Half the pages are written like they know a loophole, but they usually just send you to an app, a survey, or a login-stealing site.

If I were doing this today, my checklist for "how to find my phone by number" would be:

  • use Find My or Find My Device first
  • then check last location
  • lost mode
  • battery state
  • and nearby Bluetooth pings

Not fancy, but that is the stuff that actually has a chance of working.

Tiny detail that matters for how to find my phone by number: "deleted," "hidden," "private," and "not showing in the app" are not the same thing.

That is why one person says a method worked and another says it is fake. They may be talking about totally different situations.

Late reply but yeah, manage expectations. "how to find my phone by number" is one of those searches where the ads make it sound like there is a clean hack.

There usually is not. Secure the account/device, turn on the official settings you trust, and set things up before the next problem happens.

The timing matters more than people admit. With how to find my phone by number, if the backup/share/export/monitoring was already on, you might have a path. If you are starting after the fact, there may be nothing to pull from.

Annoying, but true.
