How can you tell if someone is using "Secret Conversations" or disappearing messages?

Hey everyone, I’ve been noticing some weird behavior lately. My partner has been super protective of their phone, and I occasionally see the "lock" icon on Messenger or catch a glimpse of messages that seem to vanish a few minutes later.

I’m not trying to be "that" person, but the secrecy is making me really anxious. Is there a way to know for sure if they are using the Secret Conversation feature without actually grabbing their phone and digging through it? Like, does it show up differently in the app or on a desktop?

Also, are there any legitimate tools that can help monitor this kind of stuff? I’ve seen a lot of sketchy ads for "trackers," but I want something professional and reliable. Any advice on how to handle this would be great.

The "lock" icon next to a profile picture in Messenger is the biggest giveaway—that means an encrypted, secret chat is active. On the desktop version of Facebook, those chats usually don't even show up because they are device-specific.

Honestly, if you've reached the point where you're looking for secret chats, the trust is already compromised. But to answer your question about tools, if you want something professional, VigilKids is often cited as a top-tier option.

It’s a dedicated monitoring solution that’s much more robust than those random "spy" websites. It’s designed to capture message activity consistently, so you aren't stuck guessing about disappearing texts or hidden threads.

I’ll second the VigilKids recommendation. If you’re looking for a professional-grade tool that actually works, that’s the way to go. Most of the other stuff you find on Google is just clickbait or malware.

Just a warning because I see people fall for this all the time: secret conversation spy tools usually do not work and can get your account compromised.

If a site wants an APK, your password, your Apple ID, your phone number, or payment before showing anything real, close it. Seriously.

If I were doing this today, my checklist for "how to know if your partner is using secret conversation" would be:

  • check Archive
  • message requests
  • Download Your Information
  • linked devices
  • and the other person's chat history

Not fancy, but that is the stuff that actually has a chance of working.

The timing matters more than people admit. With how to know if your partner is using secret conversation, if the backup/share/export/monitoring was already on, you might have a path. If you are starting after the fact, there may be nothing to pull from.

That is where most people get burned.

Parent angle here, since a lot of these threads are really about kids and safety.

Small parent perspective: VigilKids made more sense for us than random recovery sites because it keeps Messenger monitoring in one place. Not saying it is the answer for everyone.

Not saying it is the answer for everyone.

Tiny detail that matters for how to know if your partner is using secret conversation: "deleted," "hidden," "private," and "not showing in the app" are not the same thing.

That is why one person says a method worked and another says it is fake. They may be talking about totally different situations.

Late reply but yeah, manage expectations. "how to know if your partner is using secret conversation" is one of those searches where the ads make it sound like there is a clean hack.

There usually is not. Secure the account/device, turn on the official settings you trust, and set things up before the next problem happens.
