as of ios 1 5.2 and later, you can reset your iphone from the phone itself if you know the apple id password.

just enter the wrong passcode enough times until it says "iphone unavailable" or "security lockout," then on that screen there should be an "erase iphone" option in the bottom corner. tap it, sign in with your apple id password, and it'll wipe the phone

after wipe you set it up fresh like a new phone

OP: WAIT does that actually work? i've been ignoring that screen thinking it was a scam

yes it's legit. just make sure it's the real apple screen, not a random website. it's baked into ios itself

before you wipe — if you haven't been backing up to icloud, you're going to lose whatever isn't synced. photos should sync automatically if icloud photos is on. contacts too. but random app data might be gone. just a heads up

OP: i think everything's in icloud. i barely have anything on this phone lol

if for some reason the "erase iphone" option doesn't show up (older ios, some weird edge case), you can also do this at any apple store for free. they won't fix screens for free but they will help you reset your own device if you prove it's yours via apple id

also if you have a friend with a computer you can just plug the phone in and use itunes/finder to restore. takes like 20 min. might be easier than going to the store

OP: update: the erase thing worked! phone is wiping now, thank you so much 🙏

glad it worked! welcome to the club of "people who have wiped their own iphone at least once"
