sorry probably dumb question but my mom pays the internet bill and she keeps saying "i can see everything you search" whenever i'm on my phone or laptop. is that actually true? will my search history be on the bill she gets from comcast or whatever
Does my search history show up on the wifi bill??
no, your search history does not appear on the bill. the bill just shows the plan price, any overages, taxes, and data usage totals. nothing about specific sites or searches.
HOWEVER. a couple things that ARE true:
- the router in your house has logs of which devices visited which domains (not full URLs usually). a tech parent could log into the router and see "jakesphone visited pornhub.com at 2am" or whatever
- if you use a browser where you're signed into a google account that's also on her phone, she can see your search history through google account settings
- apps like circle, gryphon, openDNS at the router level CAN log everything
so she's bluffing about the bill but could theoretically see stuff other ways
OP: omg okay that's a huge relief. she's def bluffing, i don't share a google account with her and i don't think we have any fancy router stuff
also incognito/private mode doesn't hide from the router or DNS level. it only hides from the browser history on your device. common misconception
if you actually want privacy from your home network, use a VPN. your mom would just see "kid is connected to VPN" and not what sites. free ones are sketchy tho, proton vpn has a free tier that's legit
as a parent reading this — yeah a lot of us bluff lol. the amount of tech knowledge required to actually monitor everything is high and most of us aren't doing it. but also if your mom is suspicious enough to say this regularly maybe check in on why
OP: fair point lol. i think she's just worried bc im 16 and she doesn't like my boyfriend. the searches are not scandalous i promise 😂
lmao tale as old as time
