Setting up parental controls on an iPad for my 9yr old — what am I missing?

Just got my son a hand-me-down iPad for school. Set up Screen Time, put a passcode on it, limited app store purchases. Am I forgetting anything obvious? First time dealing with this and I don't want to find out the hard way he's been watching youtube at 2am or whatever

couple things people miss:

  • turn off safari and just use a kid-friendly browser, or at minimum enable "limit adult websites" under content restrictions
  • disable the app store entirely if he doesn't need it, you can install apps for him from your phone via family sharing
  • set downtime so the ipad literally won't turn on after bedtime
  • block deleting apps (otherwise they delete screen time, you'll cry)

the delete apps thing is HUGE. my daughter figured out if she deleted screen time itself the limits went away. go to content & privacy restrictions > allowed apps > turn off "deleting apps"
