just got my 10yo his first iphone. i have one too. people keep telling me to "set up family sharing" but every tutorial i watch is 20 minutes long and goes in circles. can someone just tell me the actual steps to see his location on my phone
Track my kid's iphone from my iphone — step by step?
ok here you go, no fluff:
1. on your phone: settings > [your name] > family sharing > set up family 2. add him as a family member (send invite to his apple id or create a child apple id for him) 3. on HIS phone: accept the invite, turn on "share my location" and pick your device 4. on your phone: open find my > people tab. he should appear
that's it. 5 min tops if both phones are in front of you
this. the "20 min tutorials" on youtube are padded with ads. the actual process is like 4 taps on each phone.
one gotcha: if he's under 13 you need to create a CHILD apple id for him through family sharing, not use an existing one. apple is strict about this
OP: he already has an apple id i made when he got an ipad. does that count as a child account?
depends how you set it up. go to settings > [his name] and it'll say either "child" or just normal. if it's normal you might need to migrate him into the family properly
also enable "stolen device protection" and "find my iphone" on his phone while you're in there. if he loses it (he will) you'll thank yourself later
unsolicited advice but — turn on screen time too while you have his phone. set downtime, app limits, and content restrictions. 10yo with an unlocked iphone is a recipe for unsupervised youtube at midnight, ask me how i know
OP: noted lol. i figured. thanks everyone this was way easier than all those videos made it sound
