getting out of an abusive relationship. i strongly suspect my ex put a tracker on my car because he knows where i am way too often. how do i actually find this thing if he hid it well. i can't afford a mechanic rn and i don't know anyone
Think there's a tracker on my car, how do i find it
first things first — your safety comes before the car. if you think he's tracking you, go to a public place and call a dv hotline or local dv shelter. they often have resources including help with vehicle sweeps. national dv hotline is 1-800-799-7233
now for the actual finding:
common hiding spots:
- under the car, attached magnetically (walk around with a flashlight and look)
- inside wheel wells
- under bumpers
- inside the car: under seats, in glove box, behind dashboard panels, in trunk lining
- plugged into the OBD-II port (under the steering wheel area)
check the obd port first — easiest to hide there and just pulls out
OP: i'll check there today. what does a tracker look like
varies a lot. could be:
- small black box with or without a magnet (hardwired/battery gps tracker)
- an airtag (white coin-sized, apple logo) or samsung smarttag
- tile (square, thinner than airtag)
- a device plugged into the obd port that looks like a small usb dongle
if your phone is an iphone it'll automatically alert you if an unknown airtag has been traveling with you for a while. check your notifications from the last few weeks
on android, download "tracker detect" app from google (it's official) to scan for airtags. it doesn't auto-alert like iphone does
also check under the hood near the battery or fuse box. some hardwired trackers tap into the car's power and get hidden there. look for anything that has wires running to it that you don't recognize
please don't remove it immediately if you find one — this can be evidence of stalking which is a crime in most states. document it, take photos, contact local police non-emergency line or a dv advocate who can help you preserve evidence while also getting it disabled
some jurisdictions even have free auto sweeps for dv victims. call your local shelter even if you don't need housing, they'll know the resources in your area
OP: thank you all. i didn't know about the evidence thing, that's important. i'll call the hotline today
rooting for you. you're doing the right thing. ❤️
