my husband and i share locations via find my and it's been fine for years. my mom just got an iphone and wants to share hers with me too so i can help if she gets lost. before i set it up she keeps asking me "will you see everywhere i go? even if i'm at the doctor?" i wanna give her a good answer. does she get any notification when i check or is it just silent
Using Find My to locate family — what does the other person actually see?
totally silent. when you check someone's location on find my they get no notification, no indicator, nothing. it's a one-way curtain. she won't know when or how often you check
however she can:
- stop sharing at any time (find my > people > her name > stop sharing)
- pause sharing temporarily
- see a list of who she's sharing with
yeah it's silent on the checker's side. apple designed it that way intentionally so you're not nagging people every time you check.
one thing to tell your mom — if she ever feels weird about it she can just toggle it off for a few hours, no explanation needed. some people do that for dr appointments, therapy, etc and it's totally fine
OP: oh good that'll make her feel better. does it say when she pauses it? or does it just show "no location found" on my end
shows "location not available" or "no location found." doesn't specifically say she paused it. could be a dead phone too so it's ambiguous
this is a really healthy question to ask btw. location sharing is a consent thing. glad you're being thoughtful about it with your mom
for elderly parents i'd also suggest turning on emergency sos and medical id on her phone. find my is great for the daily stuff but if she falls or gets confused the SOS features are more useful
apple watch is also worth mentioning for this use case. fall detection saved my dad's life, no joke
